Leon Fulgence – Visual Artist
Antsirabe, Madagascar
Born in 1950 in the town Farafangana on the southeast coast of Madagascar. Leon is considered the Global Ambassador for Malagasy Art, he began painting as a child and first exhibited his work at 21 years of age in the capital city Antananarivo and later in France while in his thirties.
Leon was awarded the distinction of Officer of the Arts, Letters and Culture from the national Ordre des Arts and founded the Sarikanto (marvellous image) Association to promote visual artists in Madagascar.
The Managing Partner of Toso&Jura, Robert St.Clair first met Leon in 2024 at his studio in the city of Antsirabe in central Madagascar where he acquired several of his more traditional oil paintings.Since then Leon was commissioned to create some abstract works specifically to exhibit in 2026.
Leon Fulgence is widely considered the greatest living visual artist in Madagascar which despite it’s widespread poverty has a surprisingly bustling modern “art scene”.
